It's set in an imaginary world where a middle age black man living his normal (boring ) life expects to find his purpose in life.

He grew up admiring brilliant  jazz  musicians and from that time he decided this is my purpose: I will be a big jazz musician. Little by little he achieved his dream, first he went to a conservatory and his abilities were very admirable but then he ended up teaching young kids. 

As a  normal person he faced some issues with his family also he wasn't much successful in his dates. But one day when every thing was about to change the author gives us a big subplot and from this point his life changed completely.

What I can say is that at the end of the movie you`ll end up with teary eyes and you`ll realise the most important thing is what you are doing in the 'middle of the way'.
